Syllabus

Mrs. Betts

Science  6th grade

Rules & Expectations

Daily Routine

  • Upon arrival you must sharpen your pencil (using handheld sharpener provided on table or electric sharpener...this is discussed later) and start on the bell ringer/daily warmup.  Student is not to be walking around or disturbing others.

Behavior

  • Student will be given one verbal warning and given the chance to correct the behavior. If the behavior continues parent contact will be made.  If this does not solve the issue an office referral will be made.

**NOTE: not all situations are the same and therefore do not require the same discipline

Classroom rules and expectations

  • Cheating is not prohibited and results in a zero and parent contact.

This includes letting someone cheat off of you AND cheating off of someone else.

  • Test can not be made up for a 70, however daily classwork and homework can be.

**NOTE: It is up to the student to do this. I will not remind you that you have a failing grade (below 70).  This is part of learning to be responsible for your grade and success.

  • Projects outside of class will be assigned throughout the year.  In most cases I supply as much class time as possible OR make it an assignment with multiple options so that ALL students have the opportunity to succeed.  If the project is late the student will lose 10 points a day for each day past the due date. The assignment will not be accepted after the student falls below 70. For example, if it is due on a Monday and is not turned in ….the highest you can receive on Tues. would be 90, Wed. 80, Thurs. 70, and after that it will not accepted.

  • No gum chewing

  • All lab tables have supply boxes on them. They include: erasers, pencils, scissors, glue, and handheld sharpeners.  These are for labs/projects. They also are for everyday class use.  If a student needs to sharpen their pencil during class they may use this to keep from getting up disturbing the whole class.  If a student forgets (we all have those days) a pencil or needs an eraser they may use these. However, they must be put back at the end of class. Everything is labeled with my name.

Composition Notebook

  • All science classes are required to keep a composition book.  These stay in my classroom for vocabulary and labs throughout the year.

Lab equipment and rules

  • Safety and equipment rules are covered the first week of school.  It is very important that each student follows the rules in lab for safety of all. **NOTE: Failure to follow lab safety rules will result in a zero. For example: horseplay during labs (throwing an eraser or pencil, shoving, etc), eating in the lab, and inappropriate use of equipment.

  • Participation grades are given for labs. It is very important to learn to work with others. Points will be taken off for students who can not work together. If there is a major issue students need to let me know beforehand.  If it is one person not doing their part of the lab or project I need to know immediately.  This can be done in private after class if need be.
